Per Politico, OpenAI spent much of last year advocating strict limits on Nvidia and other US chipmakers selling advanced processors to China, giving lawmakers hope it would back new export controls — but Capitol Hill aides and lobbyists now say the company has stopped pressing the issue.
Anthropic researcher @NathanCalvin called the retreat baffling, noting some of the same people who oppose AI safety rules over China concerns want to sell far more advanced chips to China, and speculating OpenAI softened its stance "to keep NVIDIA happy."
