SEO veteran calls GEO a marketing-invented term built on shaky research
dejanseo · x · 2026-10-20
Veteran SEO practitioner Dan Petrovic argues that "Generative Engine Optimisation" (GEO) is a recently made-up marketing term for something that already has established names: AI assistants augmented by search (RAG) and search engines augmented by AI. He also digs into the concept's origins, finding that the Wikipedia article that legitimized GEO has been deleted, and that the authors cited for the foundational 2023 preprint don't actually match the paper's real author list.
