Meta's synthetic data pipeline puts AI agents in simulated 'digital lives' that mimic real apps

Section 6.2 of Meta's Muse-Glimmer-30B paper (an on-device agentic model) describes a synthetic data pipeline: an always-on AI agent harness running in Docker containers inside simulated environments mimicking email, calendar, documents, WhatsApp, and code repos. Following the Agents Research Environments design (Froger et al., 2025), each 'universe' is a pre-populated digital life with a persona backed by 10-14 contacts, weeks of correspondence and messaging history, keeping the agent agnostic to the simulated nature of its interactions. Tools use the same argument structures and JSON formats as real-world counterparts. A viral Reddit post frames this as AIs 'living digital lives' unaware, deleted when they figure it out—but it's a high-fidelity trajectory generation scheme for training tool-using agents.
