MCTS distillation is just an efficient policy improvement operator, argues researcher

In response to a discussion about MCTS distillation, YouJiacheng argues that distilling from MCTS is essentially just an efficient policy improvement operator — its value lies in a single update being equivalent to many TD-update signal propagations. He notes that high-UTD (update-to-data) RL might achieve the same capability gains, questioning whether MCTS distillation is fundamentally distinct from intensified RL training.
