Uber-linked group secretly campaigns to ban robotaxis in Washington D.C.

Public website records connect People First Transportation Alliance, an anti-robotaxi group active in Washington D.C., with Citizens for Affordable Rates (CAR), a campaign that disclosed $11.6 million from Uber in the first half of 2026.
People First spent the fall campaigning against robotaxis: an Oct 6 rally themed "People First, Not Robotaxis" at the Wilson Building and flyers reading "Against Waymo's Robotaxis." When the Washington Post asked on Oct 19 who is behind the group, several listed founding members declined to answer, and the site does not disclose who commissioned or paid for it. Critics call it a covert Uber-funded effort to block autonomous taxis.
