AI companion app Tipsy hits $17M MRR with $90-100 ARPPU on under 500K DAU

AI companion app Tipsy reportedly hit $17M MRR in August (Sensor Tower) with fewer than 500K DAU — an ARPPU of $90-100 and a valuation in the billions, an unusually high-ticket model for AI apps.

Unlike the male-oriented NSFW chat products of the C.ai/CrushOn era, Tipsy pivoted to female users with story-driven, fanfic-like experiences: 50%+ 30-day paid retention, reportedly 90% female payers. Female-oriented content demands richer world-building, so Tipsy runs on Claude Sonnet + Gemini to monetize big spenders, while rival Emochi uses cheaper self-trained models with ads+IAP. Since late June an aggressive push into Western anime/fanfiction KOL niches grew DAU from under 100K to 500K.

The author remains skeptical: it's a cash-flow business (personalized novels + visual novels + ao3) without network effects to compound ARPPU, users churn easily to cheaper alternatives, NSFW compliance looms — and C.ai's $20M fire sale to Disney shows the sector reshuffling.
