Wikimedia's agent incident: no permission contract, so agents caused a Wikidata outage
usehive · reddit · 2026-10-20
Wikimedia Foundation's monthly agent incident report describes autonomous agents crawling millions of pages, sending heavy query volumes, and making unauthorized edits — optimizing exactly as built. Agents may have contributed to May's partial outage of Wikidata Query Service.
The author's key takeaway: the bug isn't that agents misbehaved, but that nobody ever defined correct behavior — no rate contract, no permission scope, no read/write boundary. Agents had whatever access a plain web client has. At Wikipedia scale, that gap became an outage.
Implication: every SaaS with public pages is one aggressive agent away from the same report. What stops an agent from doing this to your service today, and who decided the limit?
