AWS and the PyTorch team announced TorchNeuron, an open-source (Apache 2.0) native PyTorch backend for AWS Trainium, launching in public beta at the PyTorch Conference on Oct 20.
- Built on PyTorch's accelerator-agnostic extension points (PrivateUse1 device backend and torch.accelerator APIs), registering Trainium as a standard PyTorch device
- Moving a training loop over is as simple as .to('neuron'), with existing model code, libraries, and tools largely unchanged
- Supports eager execution for research and debugging
The integration significantly lowers the cost of porting CUDA-era PyTorch research and production workloads to AWS's in-house AI chips, a major step for Trainium's software ecosystem.
