Beff Jezos backs decentralized AI race over Sam Altman's 'merge' idea, citing game theory
beffjezos · x · 2026-10-20
e/acc founder Beff Jezos endorsed Dave Shapiro's rebuttal to Sam Altman's idea of AI labs 'merging,' calling decentralized permissionless acceleration the game-theoretic optimum.
Shapiro frames the issue as a Byzantine Generals problem: AI will run across thousands of data centers worldwide, making physical 'merging' both impossible and undesirable—incomplete information can't be solved even between companies, let alone states. The real equilibrium, he argues, is the semi-anarchic competition already underway: many AIs with different capabilities and resources competing for compute, with the most useful, efficient, and loyal ones selected for more compute and evolving.
