Neoclouds' New Playbook: GPU Rental Is Commoditized, So They're Buying Software Moats
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-20
GPU rental is no longer scarce—shoe company Allbirds, telcos, former bitcoin miners and even video sites now sell compute—so pure rental Neoclouds face a profit-crushing price war. The leaders are instead buying software to raise switching costs:
- Nscale bought Anyscale ($1.65B): distribute big AI jobs across many servers
- Nebius bought Eigen AI ($643M) and Tavily ($275M): faster/cheaper inference plus web search for AI agents
- IREN bought Mirantis ($625M): turn GPU racks into enterprise-ready clouds
- CoreWeave bought Weights & Biases ($1.7B): training tracking for AI teams
- Crusoe bought Atero (undisclosed): faster model responses
The logic: the best software can't be built quickly, so these Neoclouds buy it outright.
