Gartner: most AI datacenter builders may not recoup investment before GPUs expire

Gartner warns that many companies building AI datacenters may not earn back their investment before their chips go out of date, as compute payback periods lag behind GPU refresh cycles.
Resale is becoming part of GPU economics: Shadeform announced new features including Flex VMs that can take bare-metal GPUs from any datacenter and make them rentable within 30 minutes, giving smaller operators day-one access to the secondary market. The team also notes 2026's compute market: prices skyrocketing, minimum contract durations tripling, near-term capacity scarce, and agents emerging as primary compute consumers—existing rental models no longer fit.
