Amazon's $220B AI bet: warehouses of uninstalled GPUs and no 'clear forecasted path' to deploy them

Business Insider obtained internal recordings and documents revealing strain in Amazon's AI buildout:
- AWS CFO John Felton joked in a September staff meeting that the infra chief had taken the company free-cash-flow negative — a reversal from two years ago, with $220B in capex this year alone.
- Ed Zitron estimates 50% of AI chip sales ($200B–$300B+) sit in warehouses: some AWS sites have rack space but lack power, leaving gear staged in intermediary warehouses.
- At least one AWS supply chain team admitted in internal email it had no "clear forecasted path" for getting racks into data centers; Amazon normally pays only on installation, so stockpiling means earlier cash outlays and delayed revenue.
