Anthropic's draft federal AI safety bill falls short of binding standards, watchdog ARI says

- A leaked draft shows Anthropic has penned proposed federal legislation establishing a framework for advanced AI oversight: mandatory third-party safety evaluations, disclosures from AI developers, and limited federal authority to block dangerous models in certain circumstances.
- Watchdog group Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) issued a statement crediting Anthropic's seriousness and some strong sections, but argues the draft stops short of binding federal safety standards governing model capabilities and mitigations, failing ARI's minimum red lines.
- "It's not easy to offer a detailed vision for a comprehensive framework," said ARI President Brad Carson, "but the circulating bill text does not meet the minimum requirements for federal guardrails to keep AI development safe."
