RTX 5090 Laptop GPU hangs with Xid 8 under Linux — CUDA graphs bug still unfixed
SOC_FreeDiver · reddit · 2026-10-20
A Reddit user running local LLMs on Linux Mint with an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU (24 GB) in a Lenovo Legion keeps hitting GPU hangs flagged as Xid 8. The issue matches llama.cpp bug #27330: CUDA graph evaluation hangs the GPU channel.
- Workaround: set GGMLCUDADISABLEGRAPHS=1 to disable CUDA graphs, at some performance cost
- The user is also stuck on driver/kernel combos: kernel 7.1.13 works, 7.2 breaks NVIDIA drivers, and driver 595.99.02 is the newest that installs
- Still no upstream fix, and the author is frustrated with the pace
