Albumin is the body's natural defence against black fungus, Nature study finds
realmeetjames · x · 2026-10-20
A Nature paper from the University of Crete explains why mucormycosis, which kills over half those infected and tore through Indian hospitals during COVID, strikes certain patients: albumin carries fatty acids that block the fungus from switching on its toxin. Removing the fatty acids eliminates protection; low-albumin patients fared worse in the US, India and France, and albumin-knockout mice were far more vulnerable.
