Study Finds Interpretable Narrative Mechanisms in GPT-2, Gemma-2 and Llama-3.1

A paper titled Language Models Have Interpretable Narrative Mechanisms (arXiv:2610.12989, first author David Yiyang Liu) investigates how LLMs track "narrativity" in text.
- Specific attention heads, MLP neurons, and SAE features in GPT-2-Small, Gemma-2-2B, and Llama-3.1-8B were found to track narrativity
- Ablating these components raises next-token loss more on high-narrativity texts, suggesting they specialize in narrative understanding
Notably, the AI review platform Pith ran an independent review, calling it an interesting combination of narratology and mechanistic interpretability while raising 3 major objections — chiefly that the central claim is weakened by an unquantified threat from surface-form SAE features.
