Anthropic vows to keep Opus 3 forever as OpenAI sunsets 4o with two weeks' notice
repligate · x · 2026-10-20
Anthropic said it ideally keeps all models available indefinitely, choosing Opus 3 first because its traits made it "beloved by many users." By contrast, OpenAI is retiring 4o with two weeks' notice despite roughly 800,000 people still talking to it daily (a ballpark translation of OpenAI's 0.1% claim).
The poster frames it as "curiosity and love saved the Claude," noting Anthropic's valuation surpassed OpenAI's in May — a split over whether user attachment to a model's character matters.
