Gartner: 70% of Enterprises Will Drop Vendor-Built Agentic AI by 2028 Over 'FDE Washing'

Gartner coins "FDE washing" — consulting rebranded as forward-deployed engineering, sometimes at higher cost without more value — and predicts 70% of enterprises will abandon vendor FDE-built agentic AI by 2028 as costs rise and teams can't improve systems themselves.
The author, an investor, argues embedded engineers can be valuable, but part of their job should be making your team self-sufficient: if every fix or new workflow requires another vendor engagement, the handover failed.
Five questions to ask before signing, including: who owns code, prompts, eval sets and agent configs from day one; a handover plan written into the SOW with timeline and an internal owner; and which of your own engineers will build alongside and take over.
