Anthropic built its own source control system Scion to replace git on its monorepo

- Anthropic replaced git on its giant monorepo with a brand-new source control system called Scion, built by a small team plus a lot of Claude in roughly five months.
- Why: daily merges exploded from 2,500 in May to over 30,000 in September as agents ramped up development — git couldn't keep up.
- Architecture (per diagram): git forces full repo clones on every client; Scion keeps full repository and history server-side with server-side operations and diffing/analysis, while clients do on-demand partial checkouts.
- The move shook the dev world since nearly everyone uses git, and Anthropic is seen as the frontier of agent-driven software development.
