Tau: an open-source terminal coding agent built to slash token usage
Ill-Process-7232 · reddit · 2026-10-19
A developer open-sourced Tau (TauCode), a terminal coding agent built over 6 months around lower cost and better results:
- Native adapters for 28 providers — direct API calls, no proxy; full agent loop (tools, skills, subagents, MCP, LSP, hooks) works with every provider
- Token-lean tools: ripgrep-based search excludes nodemodules-style noise; file reads start with a skeleton then fetch only the 50 relevant lines of an 800-line file
- Python kernel tool as the cost killer: analyzing 20 CSVs takes one turn with a full scripted workflow instead of 30 turns, keeping context clean and costs down
- Built-in LSP so the agent sees real type errors, definitions and references
- Worktree snapshots in a separate git repo — save, diff, restore anytime
- Keyless web search, Firecrawl support, and a browser tool for frontend verification and automated testing
- /remote to follow and approve tasks from your phone via Wi-Fi or a free Cloudflare tunnel; shareable session links
- Persistent subagents (follow-ups keep context), queued writes to shared files, cheap/normal modes, provider fallback, session tree branching, and usage reports
