CMU seminar digs into Floe lakehouse engine: no buffer pool, I/O faster than io_uring

CMU's 'Andy at Sea' database seminar hosts Thomas Kejser (ex-Microsoft SQL Server performance record holder, Yellowbrick) on the Floe lakehouse query engine. Floe ships a custom userspace task-based kernel with no buffer pool, issues I/O in under 1000 cycles per request (beating iouring), maximizes joins/sec, and runs 5MB SQL queries to completion. Its planner started as a Postgres fork and was rewritten after 100K lines of diff. Floe runs complex queries directly on Iceberg/Delta lakehouses; the talk deep-dives into FloeScan, which indexes cloud object storage for fast reads by users and agents.
