Dev builds a tiny Rust microvm VMM in one day to learn KVM internals
Abhishekcur · x · 2026-10-19
The author spent a day writing a tiny microvm VMM in Rust to understand virtualization internals à la KVM: one vCPU, Linux/initramfs loading, and serial output. Initial tests pass; actually booting a guest is next.
The screenshot shows the core main.rs flow — opening /dev/kvm, creating the VM, registering guest memory via kvmuserspaceaddress, setting up the irqchip/PIT, and creating a vCPU. A nice demonstration of learning virtualization by building a minimal VMM from scratch instead of diving into QEMU.
