Anthropic commits ~20% of shares to public benefit fund; critics call it data-exploitation whitewash
AlexTensor · x · 2026-10-19
Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned entity seeded with 5% of its shares, with up to 2% more added per 50% valuation increase over a baseline—roughly 20% of shares in total pledged to public good. Co-founders have pledged 80% of their equity and about half of employees donate equity via a matching program.
Ed Newton-Rex (Fairly Trained) quoted the announcement to push back: Anthropic exploits the work of millions of creatives without paying, and donating a fraction of ill-gotten gains doesn't absolve that.
