Authors Guild Issues AI Guidelines: Publishers Must Not Rely on AI Detectors Alone
lmoroney · x · 2026-10-19
The Authors Guild has published guidelines for publishers on AI use and detection, following multiple book cancellations over AI allegations. Key points: every publisher should have a written AI policy defining permitted uses; use of AI detectors must be transparent; before sending manuscripts to third-party detection services, publishers must confirm texts won't be retained or used for training and obtain author consent; no one should accuse a writer of AI use based on a detector alone, let alone cancel a contract, since "one false accusation can ruin an author's career." Authors are likewise expected to be transparent about their AI use.
