Burkov: coordinate output is the hidden bottleneck of GUI agents
burkov · x · 2026-10-19
Andriy Burkov analyzes why GUI visual grounding — mapping a natural-language instruction to the exact on-screen element — is a common bottleneck for computer-use agents. Key points: coordinate-output methods (click points/boxes) are brittle on high-res screens with small targets and distractors; supervision is ambiguous since many points inside an element are valid; coordinate failures offer little diagnostic value. Newer coordinate-free approaches predict attention distributions over image patches, but that attention is usually trained only against spatial targets with no explicit check. Grounding, he argues, deserves more attention as a failure source.
