AI-rewritten OpenGL backend gives Inkscape on Mac another 2x speedup over Nightly
thomasahle · x · 2026-10-19
thomasahle reports that after rewriting Inkscape's Mac OpenGL backend with Astra, much of the headline 100x speedup turned out to come from simply running a newer upstream version — but his fork still delivers a 2x speedup over Nightly, with better startup and UI responsiveness.
He'd contribute upstream, but Inkscape doesn't currently accept AI-assisted code changes, so the performance fork is public. He's asking what other software is inexcusably slow.
