Agent Status Protocol: A Framework-Agnostic Way for AI Agents to Report State
kalyan_kpl · x · 2026-10-19
The author proposes the Agent Status Protocol (ASP), a lightweight protocol for multi-agent systems: any AI agent that can send an HTTP POST can report its operational state to a status server, and observers such as dashboards receive updates as soon as state changes.
Key design properties:
- Any framework: no SDK, runtime, or vendor required, avoiding ecosystem lock-in;
- Any topology: the same state vocabulary covers OFP-managed debates, A2A task delegation, and voice conferences, plus agents using neither protocol;
- State only: utterances, prompts, and replies never enter ASP (Section 12), keeping monitoring decoupled from conversation content.
ASP targets observability of heterogeneous agent fleets, offering properties that proprietary or framework-bound solutions don't provide together.
