EA insider argues philanthropy may be suboptimal vs. investing in companies
NunoSempere · x · 2026-10-19
NunoSempere, part of the effective altruism community, argues that philanthropic giving may not be the optimal altruistic move—donating simply loses you the money, whereas investing in companies could keep it compounding. He says he has a brief in him to write on this and it could be important to circulate, though he isn't sure who to send it to. David Manbeam noted Jaan Tallinn is another plausible contender, but as far as he can tell, Jaan doesn't explicitly compare dissimilar cause areas—he mostly picks the ones he thinks most important and funds them.
