AI veteran calls out arbitrary p(doom) and 20% GDP predictions: show your data
hardimanjames · x · 2026-10-19
Lifelong AI practitioner bradfordcross says he's very bullish on AI yet deeply disappointed by serious people claiming p(doom) of 20% or 20% GDP growth by 2030 without sharing data or statistical foundations. His back-of-envelope math: tech is 10% of US GDP with overall growth around 2.5%, so a 20% growth rate implies roughly a 10x acceleration ($7T annually on a $33.5T GDP), while all tech combined drove only 35% of past-decade growth — meaning AI alone would have to dwarf every prior technology. He argues quant-minded people making gut-feel public predictions on existential and macro questions is deeply irresponsible: bring data and stats, or be more reserved.
