Classic DeepMind paper: the prefrontal cortex works as a meta-reinforcement learning system

A repost highlights the influential 2018 Nature Neuroscience paper by DeepMind researchers (Jane X. Wang, Matthew Botvinick, Demis Hassabis et al., 643+ citations) reframing reward-based learning in the brain.
- Dopamine theory: dopamine signals reward prediction errors (RPEs), adjusting synaptic strengths to link situations, actions and rewards.
- PFC learns too: the prefrontal cortex represents action values, reward history, previous choices and upcoming actions, capable of its own reward-based learning.
- Meta-RL theory: rather than competing systems, dopamine trains the PFC network to develop its own independent learning algorithm.
- Brain as RNN: the PFC is modeled as a recurrent neural network trained at the meta level, enabling fast adaptation to new tasks.
The theory accommodates the standard model's findings while explaining a wider range of observations.
