Codex Windows bug: in-app browser never binds to active conversation, Computer Use blocked
xzdxjbs · ghdev · 2026-10-15
- A detailed bug report on the OpenAI Codex desktop app (26.1007.9446.0, Windows 11) describes the in-app browser persistently failing with "Browser is not available: iab" — agent.browsers.get("iab") never resolves in the conversation the user is actually typing in.
- Logs show the browser route gets reassigned to an unsent "new chat" draft (client-new-thread: prefixed conversation) instead of the real one. All feature flags (browseruse, computeruse, inappbrowser) are enabled and the availability state machine reports available, ruling out gating or settings issues.
- The report also found the Chrome/Edge native-host runtime registry is never written, hard-blocking Computer Use on every browser window. It includes a full environment table (symlinked CODEXHOME, Edge as default, extension installed) and 7 comments so far.
