100+ paid apps cloned in Rust by AI agents: Adobe, Office, Outlook, ElevenLabs all hit
Numerous-Campaign844 · reddit · 2026-10-19
A Reddit roundup details the viral "Rust remake" wave: @storytold's open-source Rust replacements for 7 Adobe apps hit 168k+ combined GitHub stars (PhotoCraft alone 67k), followed by pure-Rust Word/Excel/PowerPoint covering 90% core functionality and 501/523 Excel formulas, plus VBA support. Over 100 paid apps are now clean-room reimplemented on remade.wiki, including two competing Outlook clones (HTML email rendering without a browser engine, Claude via MCP), VoiceStudio — a 74k-star offline ElevenLabs alternative with voice cloning in 646 languages — and clones of $20k/yr engineering tools like Fusion 360, Revit and Abaqus. The author tested PdfCraft on a damaged 68.5MB, 2,744-page PDF: launched in under 2 seconds and auto-repaired it. The repo operates like an autonomous AI hive: 945 issues, 630 PRs, with agents patching reported bugs within minutes. Caveat: the new BrowseCraft browser engine is likely full of security holes; offline apps are safer bets. Open question: do any of these survive the hype?
