WWII gave 3 years of 17% growth, COVID one year at 35%: history's check on AI GDP claims
willcb · x · 2026-10-19
willcb adds historical data to the debate over whether AI can deliver 17% annual GDP growth: rapid WWII industrialization gave the US about 3 years of 17% growth and full employment, but much of it was Depression rebound (unemployment was still 15% in 1940); COVID briefly produced a year of 35% growth, which was merely mean reversion after shutting the economy for a quarter.
The upshot supports his earlier framing: one year of 17% needs an adoption overhang, several years requires human-replacement robotics without mass unemployment, and decades would need near-physical miracles.
