Ezra Klein's NYT op-ed: would you press a button for AI abundance that cedes primacy to China?
thomasahle · x · 2026-10-19
NYT columnist Ezra Klein's long-form op-ed "This Is the Good Scenario?" poses a thought experiment: press a big red button and China becomes the world's first hyperpower — surpassing the US in technical sophistication, manufacturing, and wealth — while the global economy booms and Americans enjoy cures, cheap energy, and lives of luxury. Control, once gone, is gone. Klein argues the AI debate over-centers p(doom) and should center p(utopia): what happens if AI succeeds exactly as its inventors and investors hope, and what that success costs in control of the economic, scientific, and geopolitical frontier.
