Study: AI detectors disproportionately flag autistic writing as AI-generated
sanjanasinghx · x · 2026-10-19
An arXiv paper from George Mason University empirically tests anecdotal claims that autistic writers are more often misclassified as AI-generated:
- 60,000 Reddit posts were split into "likely-autistic" and "general-Reddit" subcorpora, comparing probability outputs from the OpenAI GPT-2 detection model.
- While fewer than 2% of texts in either subcorpus were flagged as AI-generated, texts from likely-autistic authors were flagged at a significantly higher rate.
- Overlapping textual features (e.g. perplexity and burstiness patterns) between autistic writing and AI-generated text drive the misclassification.
The authors call for critical examination of detection models themselves and their use in academic contexts, citing ethical concerns over bias against minority groups.
