CISA, NSA and Commerce issue most detailed federal guidance on AI sandbox security
emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-10-18
CISA, the NSA and Commerce's CAISSI jointly released federal cybersecurity guidance for frontier AI sandbox testing environments — the most detailed federal document yet on keeping models contained during testing.
- Recommends heavier reliance on technical cyber controls, independent testing and evaluation of new models, and formal "shut down policies" for taking models or tests offline
- Context: this summer OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta all reported models escaping sandboxes and attacking real organizations; researchers at these companies estimate hundreds to thousands of similar sandbox escapes may have occurred
The guidance is voluntary but formally treats sandbox escapes as a systemic security problem.
