TSMC's conservatism explained: $20bn fabs can't be returned, while Nvidia carries $279bn in supply commitments

A thread on whether the AI buildout is heading for a supply glut. Quoted: Freda Duan argues US power constraints ≠ global supply constraints — 2027 global demand is 50-55GW vs 50GW of new global supply (SemiAnalysis, incl. 10-20GW for OpenAI/Anthropic), but US supply is only 20-25GW against 35GW of US demand.
Republisher MFCamillus adds: TSMC is notoriously conservative in forecasts not because it's the only adult in the room, but because it writes the checks for fabs. If AI demand is overestimated, Nvidia takes a valuation hit with $279bn in disclosed supply/capacity commitments; TSMC faces tens of billions sunk into fabs that could sit underutilized for years. You can renegotiate supply commitments or write down inventory — you can't return a $20bn fab.
