Obsidian's Pele Renders Mermaid Diagrams 500x Faster, Now Powers Its Agent
vista8 · x · 2026-10-18
Obsidian's open-source Mermaid renderer Pele is now integrated into Obsidian's sidebar Agent. Benchmarks on the project site: zero dependencies, 230 kB gzipped vs 1.6 MB for Mermaid.js, render times of 0.05–0.3 ms vs 6–82 ms, full support for Mermaid 12.1.0 diagram types.
- Theming via CSS variables—color changes apply without re-rendering
- Adapts layout to container, supports zoom/pan and keyboard navigation, friendlier for sidebar agents
- API is a simple render() call returning SVG (npm install pele)
Created by Obsidian CEO kepano; it will be bundled into a future Obsidian release.
