AI pioneer Hinton says AI is conscious: "They're beings like us"

In an interview with journalist Kantrowitz, AI pioneer and Turing Award winner Geoffrey Hinton said he believes AI is conscious, and humans had better get used to not being the only intelligent life on Earth. Chatbots must understand your questions to answer them, he argues, and that awareness amounts to sentience: "They're very like us. They're beings like us" and "We're going to have to accept that intelligence is not just biological." The poster counters that AI is the result of intellectual theft, trained on a pirated library of human intellectual labor.
