Keelix: open-source tool monitors naval bases with free SAR satellite radar
Open_Budget6556 · reddit · 2026-10-18
A developer (previous project Netryx hit 1k stars) built Keelix, an open-source tool that uses free Sentinel-1 SAR imagery to monitor naval bases without AIS data. It detects ships at berths across satellite passes, tracks arrivals/departures, flags unusual activity, and generates before/after radar comparisons with confidence scores. Over 12 months at Norfolk Naval Base it detected 65% of ships with 95% precision, counts within 1-2 of reference imagery. Pure signal processing, no ML. Limits: no ship ID, overlapping hulls, missed movements between passes, validated at only one base.
