Economy of Minds: local incentives may replace central managers in multi-agent AI
pliang279 · x · 2026-10-18
In a thread shared by Percy Liang, Zhenting Qi invokes Leonard Read's pencil story—millions of pencils made with no central manager, coordinated by incentives alone—to critique current multi-agent AI. Today's systems work the opposite way: a central manager assigns roles, writes workflows, and decides who acts next, which becomes a bottleneck as agents and task complexity grow. The proposed 'Economy of Minds (EoM)' shows that simple local incentives can drive global self-coordination and self-improvement among LLM agents, raising the question of how a society of agents can keep improving itself over time.
