Physicist's 500-page PhD calculation redone by Claude in 10 hours, errors found

Turkish physicist Emre Onur Kahya says the one-loop quantum gravity calculation that took him a year and 500 hand-written pages in his PhD was re-derived by Claude Opus 5.5 in just 10 hours — including a paper and GitHub repo — and the model found a sign error and a missing term, though the physical conclusion survived.
The accompanying GitHub repo breaks the work into 18 tasks with 183 pages of derivations and 38 reproducible checks, using SymPy and covering QFT, inflation, and de Sitter topics. The related paper has been submitted to arXiv (2026). It raises the question of what 'effort' will mean in academia when AI can do the heavy lifting.
