AWS's OpenAI-powered Bedrock agents criticized for wrong architectural message
DavidLinthicum · x · 2026-10-18
AWS recently showcased Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI models. Cloud architect David Linthicum argues this is less a revolutionary new category than a technology configuration, and it sends the wrong architectural message.
His core points:
- For most agentic AI applications, frontier LLMs are unnecessary and can drive operating costs up to 30x higher than needed;
- Small language models, cheaper commodity LLMs, rules-based automation, workflow orchestration — or no AI at all — often suffice;
- Bundles like this confuse enterprise buyers into thinking every employee or workflow agent needs the most advanced, expensive model attached.
