Dev builds open-source War Thunder 3D skin painter with Claude Code, shares workflow lessons

A developer with 3 years' experience spent a month building Livery, a free open-source (GPL-3.0) desktop skin manager for War Thunder with a 3D paint tool that loads vehicle models from game files and writes skins back. Stack: Tauri 2 (Rust) + React/TypeScript, 177 commits, 825 Rust tests and 1,480 frontend tests. Key Claude Code lessons: design-first handoff (HTML prototypes, specs, milestone acceptance lists), a strict CLAUDE.md (fixed stack, design tokens only, i18n everything, undoable destructive actions, ask before adding dependencies), handoff files to survive fragmented sessions, specific rules beat vague ones, and passing tests aren't proof — Claude wrote many green-light tests that failed against the real game.
