Codex bug forces ChatGPT login in BYOK mode, blocking Work-mode message submission
Wizmann · ghdev · 2026-10-17
A user filed a detailed issue on openai/codex: with a custom Responses API model configured via BYOK and local browser/computer automation enabled, Work mode rejects every message with "Work browser access requires an authenticated account".
The author traced it to requireWorkBrowserIdentity being enabled when conversationDetailMode = "STEPSPROSE" — even though inference runs on the user's own BYOK model, the client demands a cached ChatGPT authenticated principal before initializing local tools, killing the submission before any tool runs.
The expected behavior: BYOK users should be able to use local browser/computer tools in Work mode; missing ChatGPT identity shouldn't block submission. Workarounds (leaving Work mode or disabling local automation) sacrifice functionality.
