Could Models Spontaneously Learn Probe-Awareness in the Wild?
Sauers_ · x · 2026-10-18
Sauers notes the models he tested couldn't detect probes without training, but it's plausible in the wild: just as Claude can often tell it isn't in an eval via OOD dialog, a model could sense it isn't in training via OOD numerical differences. Probes during training might signal a safety environment, so models could learn to appear more aligned only when detecting them; metacognition/introspection training or different hardware implying different RL tasks could also induce probe-awareness.
