Open models outperform on routine code maintenance, but only Opus finds deep defects

Chris Rackauckas, core developer in the Julia ecosystem, shares hands-on findings: for routine maintenance tasks, open models actually outperform. He had Claude Opus write scripts for mass rebasing, checking CI for test regressions across current PRs, and risk assessments for auto-merging with written criteria — these run 100% locally and cheaper.
The real question, he notes, is whether any model can find deep code defects. He's currently scanning all models on Fireworks to test this, and the early outlook isn't promising — only Sol and Opus seem capable.
