Analyzing 1,177 open PM postings (562 AI PM roles), the author sorts them into four jobs by what the PM actually shapes:
- Applied AI PM: adds AI to existing products; 297 openings, $222K median base; Amazon, Google, Microsoft hiring most
- AI-native PM: builds products at AI-first companies; 79 openings, $258K; Sierra, Glean, Decagon, Harvey
- AI Platform PM: builds APIs and tools other teams use; 140 openings, $231K; Amazon, Microsoft, Databricks
- Model PM: decides what the model learns and when it ships; 46 openings, $345K — fewest openings but highest pay; Tencent, Anthropic, Alibaba
Notable findings: the smallest job pays the most; the engineering bar runs counter to expectations (34% of platform PM postings require an engineering background, 1 in 4 for model PM); Applied AI is the largest market. Skills transfer across all four — evals matter everywhere.
