LibrePaper launches as free open-source Overleaf alternative with in-browser LaTeX compiling
analisereal · x · 2026-10-18
Developer VincentAB has released LibrePaper, a free writing platform positioning itself as an Overleaf alternative, supporting LaTeX, Typst, Markdown, and HTML.
Features include version history, comments, track changes, AI assistance, live preview, multi-editor collaboration, and built-in chat. It can be used via the main server or self-hosted. Screenshots show its key technical twist: PDFs compile in the browser via a pinned WebAssembly engine and Biber, while the server only syncs sources and stores successful PDFs. A comparison table highlights the trade-offs versus local TeX toolchains.
The project is still very new and the author is soliciting feedback.
