dotey: Rust compile times slow AI agents, so he's back to Electron except for core components
dotey · x · 2026-10-18
dotey argues Rust is a great language but a poor fit for AI-era development: slow compilation slows agent feedback loops, and its heavy resource use makes running several parallel agent tasks impractical on ordinary machines. He now uses Rust only for local core components and returns to Electron elsewhere.
Quoting jolestar's take from the Rust conference's "Rust and AI" theme: AI generates Rust code noticeably slower than other languages, but that high barrier acts as proof-of-work — choosing Rust signals commitment to long-term maintenance. AI collapses the cost of writing code but not the cost of living with it: a half-day vibe-coded tool takes a week of edge-case fixes for personal use, a month more to share. Dynamic languages defer concurrency, memory, and edge-case bugs to operations; Rust forces contracts to be locked down on day one.
